As to the video card: the best are mostly for gaming, fast textures and fast frame rates; don't need this for video editing, though you'll need a video capture device. You go with ATI all-in-wonders, with video capture on video card, or go with seperate device. On Tue, 24 Feb 2004 19:46:35 +0200, "Arifi Koseoglu"

As far as I know no manufacturer provides Linux drivers or other software for their video in/out/editing products. There are a few user-made drivers (for BT848, QuickCam, and a couple others) but AFAIK none of them will do full-frame full-motion video capture, nor is there any software for doing real video editing.

Although 256MB wouldn't exactly hurt, you should be aware people have done video editing getting by on much less than that. RAM hasn't always been this cheap, and a quarter gig was horrendously expensive even just a few years ago. But as I said, it won't hurt. Apparently Maxtor is the brand to get.

However, for the most part, esp. for video editing, it tends to be the HD subsystem that bogs down when you just happen to be copying 80GB of video back and forth for titling and transitions. In this case, an IDE RAID HD subsystem with a less expensive AMD Athlon system is a better way to go.
